Projects and Community Assistance Programs: Our Work to Date
These gift cards in the ranges of $100-250 have allowed our organization to support new Afghan families being settled in Maine. Before public benefits are established by local organizations, we make sure that families have access to basic needs.
• Hannaford Grocery Store Gift Cards
• New Afghan Family Meet and Greet Service
Board members ensure that newly arrived families are introduced to the board within 30 days. They have also assisted Afghan families by providing furnishings to help them settle into their homes.
• Driving Courses for Women
This program allows for single women households, or households that are in need of driving permits. We pay for permit sessions and driving lessons. To date we have paid more than $12,000 to allow families to be independent.
• English Classes for Women
This program allows for Afghan women to learn English comfortably in a closed private session with a female tutor.
• Afghan Community Physical Office/Community Center
This program provides the ability for Afghan women to learn English comfortably in a closed private session with a female tutor.
• Community-Based Cultural Events
The Afghan community has hosted many cultural and religious events throughout the years including: Nouroz Celebration and Eid Celebrations.
• College Student Textbook Assistance Program
This program is offered every semester as funding allows. We help support our Afghan youth by helping in purchasing their college/university schoolbooks for the semester.
• Food Distribution
We are pleased to have provided access to fresh produce and halal meat for the community.
• Meet and Greet with New Afghans
This event was held at Lewiston Gateway Community Service on January 19, 2025. This was an event where the new Afghans could meet with the new board members and express their concerns.
• Senior Gatherings (Male)
This was held at the Afghan Community Center on January 31, 2025. This event was a chance for our respected elders to get together for social gatherings with traditional games and cultural activities.
• ACM Youth Soccer Appreciation Dinner
This was held at Tasty Fried Chicken Restaurant on February 7, 2025. This event was a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of ACM Youth Soccer
